Individuals will need to have already demonstrated solid sales and management skills earlier in their career. In a Sales Director role long hours should be expected, international travel is likely, and generous remuneration on offer if results are forthcoming. It’s essential to have a tireless passion for the brand, product or service on offer as well as dedication to driving sales targets. Excellent interpersonal, team-building and communication skills go without saying. Job interviews will focus on demonstrating the ability to lead people and generate results through others.
Key Responsibilities of a Sales Director
Typically reporting to the CEO or Managing Director, the Director of Sales is responsible for managing all sales efforts, strategically launching new products or services into market, managing customer service standards, managing inventory and working with the board on long-term strategic planning for the company. The Sales Director role is fast-paced and exciting, but if targets are not being met, sales teams aren’t motivated, or market forces work against success, being answerable is not always easy.
Inside the Job
Being computer literate and able to think strategically will be key in most Sales Director jobs. A typical day will be spent in meetings with major clients, researching and building new business contacts, and working with sales managers, developing and implementing sales plans and forecasts. Developing new sales channels and exploring potential of international markets will also be important.
