Operations Manager Jobs
Attributes of an Operations Manager
The role of Operations Manager really is hands on. You’ll need to be a team player, approachable and good with people, have a very practical management style and a can-do attitude. You’ll also need a detailed understanding of how to manage the operation in question. If you’re Operations Manager of a hotel and conference centre, for example, you’ll be overseeing the day-to-day running of that enterprise, managing people development across the operation, dealing with budgets, and liasing with suppliers, clients and management. Good Operations Managers will pay great attention to detail, be excellent time managers, and consistently deliver good service on behalf of the business. Operations Managers are often promoted up from more junior sales and commercial management roles.
Key Responsibilities of an Operations Manager
The Operations Manager role is largely about ensuring all the functions of a business are running smoothly so there is an emphasis on quality management, health and safety, working within legal parameters and in accordance with environmental policies, and delivering a general duty of care to staff and customers. Time will be spent training and developing the operations team, ensuring your best staff stay with the organisation, and that less proficient members are coached up to the standards the organisation requires. There may be project work under the charge of the Operations Manager, such as overseeing a refurbishment, a relocation or setting up a new business venture.
Inside the Job
Ultimately the Operations Manager will be responsible for inspiring his or her team to succeed in meeting financial and service delivery targets. Success is normally measured against a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and it may be the job of the Operations Manager to design, implement and monitor these performance measures, feeding the resulting data back to the Operations Director or management board, and working hard to deliver improvements.
