Attributes of a Marketing Manager
Marketing Managers oversee the activities of the marketing team and must therefore possess communication and leadership skills as well as sales and marketing expertise. To land a Marketing Manager job you’ll be expected to have clocked up at least five years sales experience in the marketing industry, and be familiar with the sector or company in question. Having a strong understanding of market dynamics and customer needs will also impress, as will great ideas about how to develop cost-effective marketing strategies that will meet the company’s objectives.
Key Responsibilities of a Marketing Manager
The role of Marketing Manager focuses on developing and maintaining marketing strategies that will drive a company forward. This could mean being responsible for the marketing of company products and services to the right market, whether B2B or B2C. Time could be spent setting up Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) programmes, such as loyalty schemes and promotions, and achieving timely and positive media coverage across all relevant media. The Marketing Manager must also regularly evaluate customer research, watch market conditions and competitor behaviour, and implement marketing plan alterations as needed.

Marketing Manager salaries tend to be £35k to £55k depending on sector and location. In the role, Marketing Managers must attend meetings and liase with other company functions - particularly sales - and have regular contact with external marketing and research agencies. It’s a busy, rewarding role for those with the proven ability to manage marketing budgets, inspire a team of people and oversee many different marketing and brand-building activities at once.
