Managing Director Jobs
Attributes of a Managing Director
This is the ultimate leadership role. As the title suggests, the Managing Director needs to manage everything, so those who make a success of this incredibly demanding role will have superb management, leadership and motivational skills, be highly organised, excellent at time management, able to delegate, and have a sharp commercial and strategic brain. MDs also need to have a long-term vision for the company, and be an excellent ambassador, delivering effective PR and media messages. In very large organisations, for instance in the financial sector, there may be separate MD and Chief Executive roles with MDs heading business units, and reporting to the CEO, but generally the Managing Director and Chief Executive are one and the same. Managing Directors will be highly qualified, ideally with a business degree and a recognised management qualification.
Key Responsibilities of a Managing Director
The Managing Director leads the company and develops the corporate culture for the entire organisation, so this really is a high pressured, top level job. As well as being responsible for the day-to-day running of the company and making strategic plans for the future, the Managing Director is accountable to the board and the shareholders of the company and is directly responsible for staff and customers. Other responsibilities include controlling the budget, and carefully managing the company’s assets and resources, ensuring they deliver sustainable levels of profitability and growth over time. Managing Directors should also motivate and mentor members of the management team and chair board meetings.
Inside the Job
The Managing Director is legally responsible for the company’s affairs, complying with corporate law. For instance a proper audit procedure must be in place, employment legislation must be followed to the letter, and products and services must be produced in line with trading standards and health and safety regulations.
