IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM
Appointment to the Board of Trustees
Established in 1917, the Museum tells the story of modern war, people’s experience of war and its impact on society in Britain and the Commonwealth. Learning is core to the Museum’s purpose.
The Museum’s Trustees have collective corporate responsibility for the general management and control of the Museum and its use of public funds.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is recruiting a new Trustee for the Board of the Imperial War Museum. Responsibility for this position rests with the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. We seek someone with substantial experience of working in an international arena. Experience of working in Europe, the US, the Far East or Commonwealth countries not already represented on the Board* or in conflict zones would be especially relevant. You will be a strategic thinker with an understanding of public sector values and the principles of corporate governance, as well as a strong empathy for the purposes and values of the Museum.
* Commonwealth countries already represented on the Board of Trustees are: Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Trustees are expected to allocate sufficient time to the role and to attend four meetings per year. The appointment will be for a four year term.
Applications are welcomed from a diverse range of backgrounds and experience from candidates who believe they can make an effective contribution to the Museum and its Board. The position is not salaried but reasonable expenses will be paid.
Further information can be found on the Trustee pages of the Museum’s website www.iwm.org.uk/trustees
Alternatively please contact Gill Smith, Assistant Museum Secretary on
020 7416 5205.
Closing date for receipt of applications: Friday 27 November 2009.
This is a position regulated by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
