Attributes of an IT Manager
IT Manager jobs take many forms but virtually all require a computing degree and experience of systems administration, project management, and team leadership. Systems Managers will be responsible for development and maintenance of an efficient IT Infrastructure across an organisation, while an IT Project Leader will be implementing new information technology - possibly developing an e-commerce division, updating software or building a new customer database. Such roles require very specific knowledge and breadth of experience, not to mention extraordinary levels of energy, great negotiating skills and obsession with details. Being a line manager for technology personnel requires clear communication skills, good time management and the ability to develop and support individuals in their roles.
Key Responsibilities of an IT Manager
IT Managers are problem-solving on a daily basis, and often need to work long hours to help their team overcome technical problems, or complete an IT overhaul to deadline. There’s a fair amount of financial planning to ensure that the IT services in question meet the organisation’s vision and needs. IT Managers will also perform basic diagnostic and recovery work on network equipment, upgrading and installing additional servers to network operating systems if necessary. Technical experience is one thing, but IT Managers must also be commercially minded as a key responsibility is preparing, managing and working within large budgets.
Inside the Job
The need for technical knowledge cannot be underestimated. An IT manager for a Further Education college would typically require experience of managing LAN/WAN, an operating system like Windows Server, and an email system such as MS Exchange, as well as needing to be familiar with network monitoring and diagnostic tools. In a web development environment, IT Managers will need an understanding of XHTML, CSS and JavaScript, for example.
