IT Director Jobs
Attributes of an IT Director
To flourish in an IT Director role it’s essential to have proven senior IT management experience and a track record of driving complex IT strategies that deliver business benefits and ROI (return on investment). IT Directors can earn up to and beyond £100k a year, and could well be handling a multi-million pound IT budget, and overseeing hundreds of IT personnel. Most IT Directors will have a degree or post-graduate degree in Computer Science, possibly a business management qualification, and around 15 years experience of IT operations, software development and systems architecture. There’s also a need for IT Directors to communicate clearly - able to explain the workings of complex IT implementations to the rest of the board - and negotiate the best deals from third party technology providers.
Key Responsibilities of an IT Director
Every sector has an IT functionality that often underpins the whole operation, from secure electronic payment systems across a chain of supermarkets, to sophisticated case management solutions in law practices. IT Directors will be responsible for developing budgets, overseeing implementation of strategic software initiatives, applications and infrastructure, and seeking ways to drive business growth and reduce costs. The role could involve recruiting key IT staff within the organisation and undertaking annual and performance reviews of senior staff. The IT Director must also secure Board approval for IT resources he or she believes are required, and work closely with systems providers to schedule major projects.
Inside the Job
Today due to global market growth, IT Director jobs are often international, with many positions based in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. IT is an incredibly fast-evolving sector, so the IT Director must be up to date with the latest technologies, attending conferences and workshops, and feeding back on potentially useful innovations.
