HR Director Jobs
Attributes of an HR Director
These days HR Directors have to think and act like business people. They’ll be the chief administrator of recruitment, hiring, training, pay and benefits, and employee relations, but they’ll also need to know finance and accounting, and be skilled at driving costs down and performance levels up. HR Directors must have clear leadership skills, be able to confidently champion the HR division at Board meetings, and be tireless advocates for both the company and the people who work in the company. Director-level HR professionals often need excellent negotiating and diplomacy skills in order to perform a constant balancing act to meet both needs effectively.
Key Responsibilities of an HR Director
Under the HR Director’s stewardship companies will be constantly attracting, employing, supervising and developing their people. Staff retention - keeping people in their jobs - is a massive challenge in today’s competitive job markets so HR Directors will need to develop personnel strategies that will keep staff turnover to a minimum. Losing good people is disastrous to any organisation, so HR departments focus increasingly on reward programmes, staff recognition, employee engagement and career planning. HR Directors will also be involved in succession planning so that the directors of the future are being cultivated internally. They’ll need to keep bang up to date with legislative changes, current trends and HR best practice.
Inside the Job
HR Directors are likely to have a CIPD-recognised degree or professional qualification, and some senior professionals believe having an MBA or MSc in addition will win them more respect from other business functions and help them to take a more strategic role in the organisation. Post-graduate degrees in subjects such as psychology or organisational change are currently popular. HR directors may head up several different departments that are led by specialised HR managers, such as the recruitment manager, training manager and rewards manager.
