Attributes of a Finance Manager
Finance managers need to be numerate, commercially-minded, computer-literate and have the personality and leadership skills to manage a team effectively. Most Finance Manager - or Financial Controller - jobs require a Chartered Accountant qualification, typically CIMA, ACA or ACCA. When filling these senior financial roles employers look for an impressive track record in accounting or finance, including evidence of delivering commercial insight, and providing expert financial analysis and decision-making support. A good Finance Manager will understand market conditions and trends, and will always be seeking new ways to help drive the organisation forward.
Key Responsibilities of a Finance Manager
A Finance Manager is required to take responsibility for optimising the financial performance of the business. Time will be spent drawing up budgets, monitoring financial controls of the business, reporting to head office and the finance department on performance and adherence to budgets, and addressing cost and efficiency of the business, be it manufacturing, retail, professional services or a local authority department. Whichever sector a Finance Manager works within, producing accurate financial analysis on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, will be a major part of the job, so being computer literate and competent in accounting and finance software will be imperative.
Inside the Job
Salaries for Financial Controllers, Finance Managers, and Regional Finance Managers range from £34k to £70k. Senior finance professionals in large corporations will be reporting to directors, and potentially making recommendations for streamlining business operations and improving cash flow. In SME companies the Finance Manager could well be responsible for setting bonus levels and ensuring staffing levels are appropriate. Preparing quarterly VAT returns, annual PAYE and NI returns and company accounts will also be a major part of the job.
